Expectant mothers often face anxiety about the health and development of their babies during pregnancy. Missing the optimal windows for specific tests can lead to missed or delayed diagnoses, increasing stress and potentially risking the health of both mother and baby.

That’s why timely, accurate and reliable pregnancy screenings are crucial. At Daniel Koh Clinic, we offer several pregnancy scans to help you.

Types of pregnancy scans

There are several types of pregnancy scans, each serving different purposes at different stages
of pregnancy.

Dating scans

  • Purpose: Determine the gestational age of the foetus and estimate the due date. This is particularly important for women with irregular menstrual cycles or uncertain conception dates.

  • Timing: Typically between 8 to 11 weeks

  • Scan details: Look for the presence of an intrauterine gestational sac, measure the length of the fetus, and check for the presence of a heartbeat.

First trimester screening (NT) scans

  • Purpose: Assess the risk of structural abnormalities and common chromosomal abnormalities like Down’s syndrome, Edward’s syndrome and Patau syndrome.

  • Timing: Between 11 to 13 weeks.

  • Scan details: Measure the thickness of the fluid at the back of the baby's neck (nuchal translucency), crown-rump length, fetal heart rate and check the major organs and body systems of the fetus for abnormalities.

Cardiac Screening scan

  • Purpose: Assess the fetal cardiac structures and to identify any suspected cardiac defect.

  • Timing: Between 15 to 16 weeks.

  • Scan details: Check the fetal heart anatomy to confirm any suspected congenital heart defects identified in the first trimester screening scan.

Detailed fetal abnormality screening

  • Purpose: Detects major structural abnormalities and developmental issues in the baby's organs and body systems.

  • Timing: Between 18 to 22 weeks.

  • Scan details: Detailed examination of the baby's organs, including the head/brain, face, lip, jaw, eyes, ears, spine, heart, stomach, spine, intestines, kidneys, limbs, and other structures. Assessment of the placenta, amniotic fluid volume, heart rate and rhythm.

Fetal growth scans

  • Purpose: Routine bedside scans to assess the well-being and growth of the baby

  • Timing: Throughout pregnancy.

  • Scan details: Provide information about the baby’s growth and position, placental location and amniotic fluid levels.
