What is egg freezing?
Elective egg freezing refers to the process of cryopreserving a woman's eggs for future use when she is not currently facing medical reasons that may affect her fertility. It allows women to preserve their fertility potential by freezing eggs at a younger age for use in later years.
When is the right time to freeze my eggs?
In general, the ideal age to consider egg freezing is before the age of 35. Fertility declines with age, and a woman's egg quality and quantity decrease significantly as she gets older. Freezing eggs at a younger age allows for the preservation of healthier and more viable eggs.

In Singapore, elective egg freezing is allowed for women aged between 21 and 37, regardless of marital status.

How Does Egg Freezing Work?
Ovarian Stimulation
Hormone injections are administered to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs in a single cycle.
Egg Retrieval
After the eggs have matured, they will be collected from the ovaries using a thin needle, which is carefully inserted through the vaginal wall under direct ultrasound guidance while the patient is under sedation.
Egg Freezing
The collected eggs will be examined, with only the viable ones being chosen for freezing. This selection process involves the utilisation of a rapid-freeze technique known as vitrification, allowing them to be stored for future use.

Dr Daniel Koh is a specialist obstetrician and gynaecologist with dual subspecialty interests in reproductive medicine and maternal fetal medicine. He is a fertility specialist accredited by the Singapore Ministry of Health (MOH) to perform assisted reproductive techniques (IVF) and has expertise in managing high-risk pregnancies.
Dr Koh completed his medical education from Flinders Medical School and holds medical registration in Australia. He has won multiple awards for his exemplary performance and genuine care for his patients.
