fetal dating scans

What are dating scans?

A dating scan is a simple ultrasound scan that is performed early in pregnancy (typically between 8 and 12 weeks) to determine the gestational age of the fetus and estimated the due date. During dating scans, your doctor would measure the length size of the fetus and check for the presence of a heartbeat.

Why do you need dating scans?

Dating scans are recommended for all pregnant women to establish an accurate gestational age and estimated due date. They are particularly important for women with irregular menstrual cycles or uncertain conception dates

What do you scan for in dating scans?

In dating scans, healthcare providers primarily look for the presence of an intrauterine gestational sac, the fetus, and the presence of fetal heartbeat. These indicators help determine the age and viability of the pregnancy.
